National Heritage Areas function in partnership with the U.S. Department of the Interior National Park Service, but are not National Parks. As of 2014 there are 49 National Heritage Areas in the United States, including the Augusta Canal.

Both the Augusta Canal Discovery Center at Enterprise Mill and the Visitor Center at Savannah Rapids Park Lockkeepers Cottage are official "Passport to Your National Parks" stamp cancellation stations.
