Since 1993 the Augusta Canal Authority has followed a Master Plan to guide redevelopment of the canal. The plan supports multiple goals: recreation, preservation/ interpretation, education, conservation, and economic development.

Repairs to the 148-year old Confederate Powder Works Chimney wrapped up in March, 2010.

A number of plans guide development of the Augusta Canal and resulted in its designation as a National Heritage Area. The Canal also is central to several other community development plans including the Westobou Vision and Harrisburg Community Blueprint.
